CHAPTER FOURTEEN

With a Vengeance

Since Aeron returned home in May 2010, we managed to continue our routine and stave away any major arguments or physical fights as he continued to work on the soap opera and make a steady income. Aeron didn’t contribute much to the household but he did what he could. For maybe the second time in our entire three-year relationship, we celebrated Mother’s Day together, and for the first time, Aeron invited me to join him at a red carpet event. Though our divorce was still moving forward, we seemed to be on the mend and working toward having the family I always wished we would. I also wished he would with- draw the divorce but there was never any talk of it. I didn’t want to rock the boat.

Aeron asked me to go with him to the Thirty-Seventh Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in Las Vegas that June just two days before the award show, and frankly, it seemed as if he didn’t really want me to go. Though he claimed he invited me to prove to me he was a changed man, in retrospect, it was more about inviting my wallet than it was about inviting me. Still, I was thrilled to finally be included in something and scurried to get the children all packed and ready to spend a few days with Mona while Aeron and I took the trip along with his brother, Jonathan, and his girlfriend.

We left Los Angeles and made the three-hour drive to Las Vegas in my Range Rover. I paid for the gas. Once we arrived, Aeron and I checked into the Trump International Hotel. I paid for the room. We ate and drank at the hotel’s prestigious restaurant and at other hotels on the famed Las Vegas Strip. I paid for that, too. A day before the event, Aeron unpacked a leather suit he must have purchased back in the early nineties; he always had the worst style and tended to dress like an old man from an era far gone. I took one look at the suit and drove him to the Hugo Boss at the mall to get a more updated, debonair suit, tailored to fit his large, broad frame. He also needed appropriate underwear, socks, a pocket square, and shoes.

I paid for it all.

The trip to Las Vegas wasn’t perfect, since we had a few major fallouts during our days there, but overall we made the best of the trip and had a good time. This obviously bothered Mona as she called to complain about every little thing she could. After living in Los Angeles for decades, Mona still called Aeron for directions to just about everywhere around town. If she lost something around the house, she called him. If she had a question about something to which she already knew the answer, she called him. Aeron would often take his mother with him to events, and it bothered her that he was attending this event with me in Las Vegas while she was stuck at home with our kids as well as his brother’s two children.
